Last few decades research has paved way for advancement in man's understanding of light and rays and has changed out lives. Long since all countries have made the shift from agriculture to industrialization and now we are transitioning towards globalization.We have further advanced into modern age, which is characterized by revolution in electronic, and communication technology that has touched all aspects of our lives.
When we measure the development of a particular society, it would be wrong to judge only by its materialistic wealth or advancement. Many other factors such as health, education, morality as well as religious considerations would need to be considered while measuring all round development.
With advancement of technology we have also seen advancement of diseases as well as far reaching research and findings in treatments and drugs to combat some of the major maladies affecting the general populace. Today lifestyle diseases as well as genetic predisposition to certain fatal diseases like cancer can be detected early and treated with multi pronged course of treatment that has been enabled by technology that has helped us invent advanced diagnostic equipements.
Statistics reveal an interesting fact that the instance of dental diseases is on the rise in developed societies that have advanced due to industrialization and advancement of technology . Historically too it has been seen that dental diseases are present in all strata of societies everywhere. However further research has now shown that with increasing income levels and development of economy, the dental diseases are increasing amongst the affluent people.
When in case of lower income groups, we can safely assume that the priority is not given generally to oral hygiene and habits. Once can expect people to be maintaining poor habits thereby increasing dental maladies. The news of dental problems in the higher income groups and societies is alarming.
Developed and developing economies are characterized by highest number of retail markets and packaged food as well as junk food that is consumed by people. With juices, junk food and soft drinks etc, the amount of sugar going into our system is also increasing.
In rural economies, availability of better transportation network has opened up retail market to a wider population which is seen to consume huge amounts of chocolate and sweets. No wonder dental problems too are increasing.
In 1979, the World Health Assembly passed resolution to move towards ' Health for all ' by 2000, following which FDI established specific oral health campaign designed to eradicate dental caries in children between ages five to six years.
It is only with building awareness regarding dental diseases and training on preventive dental care that the dental health can be improved. The awareness building exercise needs to be run at national and international levels by Countries Governments. But then it is every individual's responsibility to be aware of, to understand, to follow oral hygiene for self as well as one's family and help in spreading the message of Dental Hygiene to one and all.
